Predictors of Weight Loss in Overweight Children

This exploratory study is a systematic evaluation of the effect of familial predisposition to obesity, child temperament and/or family functioning on short-term weight loss and one-year weight loss maintenance in 45 children who completed a 12-week outpatient weight management program at a Pediatric Primary Care practice center outside Western Pennsylvania.  Using parental reports and information from the child’s record, our specific aims are: 1) to determine the prevalence of familial predisposition to obesity, 2) to assess parental perceptions of three components of their overweight child’s temperament (i.e impulsivity, sensitivity to reward and activity), 3) to determine whether familial predisposition to obesity and/or components of child temperament are associated with child short-term weight loss and one-year weight loss maintenance, and 4) to obtain information on family functioning and to determine whether family functioning mediates the relationships between familial predisposition to obesity, child temperament and weight loss/weight loss maintenance in these overweight children.
