ANF

Quantitative of Five Genes Differentially

Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal mortality and perinatal morbidity worldwide and increases risk of cardiovascular disease for mother and offspring.  Currently, no biomarker predicts preeclampsia.  A pilot microarray study of first trimester chorionic villi sampling (CVS) specimens identified 5 genes most dysregulated early in preeclampsia.  The essential next step in this line of research developing genes of interest as biomarkers is to quantitate expression levels, which will confirm/disconfirm the microarray analysis and provide measurements to compare preeclamptic versus unaffected pregnancy levels.  This study aims to quantify the 5 genes of interest and will determine their potential as biomarkers and may lead to novel genes in preeclampsia.  Nursing and health care could be developed based on molecules found to characterize this devastating disorder.  This ANF project will provide preliminary studies, including effect size estimates, for the design and planning of future research.
