Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a clinical syndrome which is characterized by subtle changes in thinking that occur in an otherwise normally functioning older adult. The syndrome is hypothesized to represent a transition state between normal aging and dementia. Although MCI is emerging as a primary target of aging research, very little is known about how patients come to terms with a diagnosis of the syndrome.
To better understand how patients make sense of a diagnosis of MCI, this study will conduct an investigation which will involve interviewing patients as well as their immediate family members. The study will recruit a well-characterized sample of 60 participants with MCI and their family members from the Memory Disorders Clinic and Alzheimer’s Outreach Center of the University of Pittsburgh Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Findings will guide the development of an intervention to minimize misconceptions about MCI and promote informed health decision-making among affected patients and their family members.
